The Three-Club Range Session
Unstructured range sessions that don't transfer to the course.
Set up
Bring only three clubs: driver, a mid-iron, and a wedge. Play an imaginary hole each time.
The reps
Play 6 imaginary holes: tee shot, approach, wedge. Full routine before every shot. Score each 'hole'.
How you know it's working
A range session that feels like golf, not like beating balls.
Why it works
The course never asks for the same shot twice in a row — so practicing 40 identical 7-irons trains a skill golf never tests.
The evidence
This is the contextual-interference effect applied wholesale: motor-learning research (including golf-specific studies and a 2024 systematic review) consistently finds random, game-like practice beats blocked repetition for retention and transfer, even though it feels worse in the moment. That 'feels worse' is the point — it's the desirable difficulty doing the work.
